Costa Rica possesses at least 5% of the world’s species. Anacristina Rossi, a best-selling author well known for her environmentalism in that country, wrote La loca de Gandoca to save a biodiverse hotspot from development for tourism. She focuses on a region of Costa Rica that has long been forgotten by history textbooks, Gandoca-Manzanillo, one of the most culturally diverse regions of Costa Rica.Aside from the envrionmental legal battles that she has waged to save the Costa Rican rainforest, Rossi now faces yet another uphill legal battle after a case of copyright infringement.I’ll be traveling to Costa Rica to work with Rossi this summer… so stay tuned!

This blog begins in anticipation of May 22, the International Day for Biological Diversity. As the United Nations has indicated in many fora, the future of global biodiversity is intricately connected to cultural diversity. These postings are intended to document environmental culture in Latin America, especially as they are linked to concerns for biodiversity.
